Why a time-duration tool is so handy

Adding and subtracting time by hand is deceptively awkward, because the clock works in sixties rather than tens. Ask most people to work out the gap between nine in the morning and half past five in the evening and they will pause, because minutes do not borrow and carry the way ordinary numbers do.
